Name: Nobesutu
Qualifications: Master Port Operations
Current job: Barge Master
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My career at sea began in 2000. It was through a friend who was working for NPA(National ports authority) Port of Port Elizabeth who told me that the company was looking for black females to train as marine pilots.I submitted my CV and I was put on the familiarization programme in port of Durban tugs in October 2000.

I went to the Durban University of Technology to do S1 and S2 Maritime studies where I acquired distinctions and merit awards. I went to sea with Unicorn shipping lines for onboard sea going training as Cadet to gain skills and knowledge necessary for the certificate of competency as Deck Officer for a twelve months period. In 2004 I did Basic training for Pilots In Rotterdam-Holland. I trained as Tug Master at the Port of Durban after wards.

Life at sea is adventures and it is very challenging and you have to be pretty sure of what you want to achieve in life, I was determine to show other women that nothing is impossible, if you have to have the right mindset.

Through perseverance, determination, sacrifice and mostly hard work, I am now the first ‘black’ woman as a Barge Master for Smit Amandla Marine. I having traveled almost the rest of the world and meeting different people with different cultures, dynamics and learning about their ways of life is my greatest achievement in life.

The industry is male dominated and at the beginning of my career it was very difficult because they had been undermining women, it was stressful because I had to always work extra hard just to prove to them that career at sea is also for women and I am the perfect candidate.

I enjoy my career and it means everything to me, I know that I am good and dedicated in what I do, I constantly get good appraisals from management and clients for the work well done, In order for you to be succefull in this industry you have to the following: skills, planning, self discipline, clear headed and think safe at all times.

I would like to see myself in the management team that continuously add value to the company and be an asset for the company.I want to set an example to other people to be patient, that careers at sea don’t end on the vessels only and its only a start and building block to managing something you know pretty well.
